Banff Castle Calls Aspiring Designers to Create Couture Fashion with a Conscience

Banff Castle is calling for fashion fanatics across the country to come forward in an effort to discover the future eco-fashion stars and sustainable style innovators of 2011 as it launches the Trash to Fashion design competition.  Part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Climate Challenge Fund, the competition is inspired by a growing awareness in the world of fashion that our passion for clothing should be based on elements of sustainable design. Whether it’s sourcing material from organic producers or customising existing garments.

1970’s curtains, tin cans, fishing nets and an old sleeping bag are just a few of the materials used by local fashion designer and artist, Shan Frost to create a one of the kind ‘eco-dress’ to mark the launch of Banff Castle’s Trash to Fashion design competition. The competition aims to educate and empower others to rethink, reuse and recycle in a bid to tackle climate change.

The Trash to Fashion competition entries will be judged on design concept, innovation and environmental awareness. The winner and a shortlist of finalists will be invited to showcase their creations at the Trash to Fashion Show at Banff Castle in October 2011. The competition winner will also receive trophy.

The deadline for submissions is 1^st September. All entries must include a design portfolio with completed registration form (download here), history of materials sourced and up to 5 sketches of the design.

The Trash to Fashion Competition is open to:

• College students in their 3^rd or 4^th year of a design course
• Recent design graduates
• Young talents
• Anyone Else

Entrants must prepare a portfolio that contains:

• Your registration form
• History of materials sourced for outfits/accessories
• Sketches of outfits and accessories (up to 5 per entry)
• Completed outfits/accessories at Banff Castle by 5pm on 1^st September 2011

Entrants are responsible for transporting outfits/accessories to Banff Castle. It is possible that small personal development grants may be available from your local arts forum for participating in this event.

A Trash to Fashion Trophy for the overall winner shall be awarded to the design (outfit or accessory) which captures the essence of the waste aware challenge in an innovative and creative form.

A Trash to Fashion Gold Certificate shall be awarded to each design in the outfit and accessory category which captures the essence of the waste aware challenge in an innovative and creative form.

Trash to Fashion Certificates of Participation shall be awarded to all designers who enter the competition and participate in the Trash-To-Fashion show.
